Full course description
Service to immigrants is a historic part of library service. This course examines the evolution of library engagement with immigrants, mapping these trends to current U.S. political, racial, and information contexts. Information plays a vital role in immigrant acculturation. Working knowledge of the process of cultural adaptation, or immigrant acculturation, can enhance library workers’ knowledge of immigrants’ realities. The course will provide strategies for deepening awareness of societal conditions that, first, prompt migration and, secondly, influence immigrants’ engagement with public institutions such as libraries. This self-guided modular course offers six one-hour lessons aimed at supporting immigrant integration.
This course is capped at 50 students. Student fee sponsorships are made possible through an IMLS grant. To ensure successful completion, those who register must attend a mandatory orientation at one of three times. Enrolled students will receive an email with details.
